It looks very Asian.

Nothing against their looks, but it usually goes hand in hand with the gameplay style well known as "Asia grinder" that we westerners usually despise.

Yeah, I saw some gameplay videos and noticed that the players didn't have full skill bars. Which lead me to believe skills were acquired slowly through leveling.

Honest opinion, GW2 could use even better graphics and still be free. I dont think Aion looks very amazing. To me it looks they've recycled something from their previous games, published/developed. Some models felt like Charr and those Wings (CoH/V Inventions, almost look the same, power effects) etc.

Sure they were probably early beta/alpha version videos but still :P. GW beats Aion in its current form.

As NCSoft owns ArenaNet I doubt the pretty striking similarity to GW is accidental.
I'd say Aion uses an updated Guildwars *1* engine. To me it even looks like they've recycled some GW1 textures and models.

Also, FWIW, flight, jumping, swimming etc are supposed to be included in GW2.

Aion currently uses the Crytec engine. That technology is available to the developers and not the publishers. So more then likely Anet will not be using that engine for the game.

Aion will have no baring on GW2. Aion is more of a competition MMO that will try to steal player base off of WoW and other MMO's to make a name for themselves. Though its bad timing that 3 major MMO's are being released in 08.

From the screens and videos i've seen of Aion, it looks like a pay-to-play version of Perfect World.

Aion looks like GW1 tech with lots of new features, wierd. . . of course there's flying, climbing, etc.. . Nice upgrades to the GW engine.

If Aion were free to play I would be playing that right now. It looks quite wonderful, but I don't play regularly enough to make a monthly subscription worth my while...

I hope GW2 character cutomization is a bit more like Aion's, with as well designed armour though...

As someone who's been following Aion's development pretty closely, allow me to put in a couple actual honest-to-god facts in the thread:

Aion is based on a slightly upgraded version of CryENGINE1--which is what Far Cry used, and not Crysis, as some people might say.

Aion bears a lot of visual similarities to Lineage, but the developers have stated again and again in every interview that they are aiming for a Western market, and that they are not at all making it a grindfest. Whether they'll succeed is yet to be determined, as it's still in a closed Korean beta--the US beta starts in a couple months.

Yes, there will be a fee, but the fee is not yet determined.

Yeah i think GW2 can look good and be free of monthly fees too.
Oh and off topic, yeah i'd definitely play Aion if there was no monthly fee. :|

Seriously?

A game which is aimed for a western market, somehow begins beta testing the KOREAN VERSION first?

Seriously? Let me guess, the koreans trash the game to bits, because obviously it's not the kind of game they like?

I think not.

It's up to each publisher to decide how competitive it wants to be with its pricing. Convert prices around the globe and you will know what I mean. The same PS3 that cost the equivalent of 240€ in Japan will set you back 450€ in Europe, which is $680 in the U.S. The same is true for MMOs which will often just charge you because they know that players will mystically talk themselves into believing they have to pay monthly for that type of the MMO genre (which isn't really a genre but more of a bastard child of other genres).

Anet chooses to be very competitive and can afford to do so, mainly because they like to brag about the efficiency of their technology. Other people can afford to be bad at netcode, because they know they will have increased revenue to compensate. In the end the best gameplay will win and that is not going to be Aion.

When was the last time you have seen full 3D combat? That's pretty hardcore and very hard to do right and make it playable.

Graphics have absolutley nothing to do with monthly costs. (If they did, WoW would be the biggest rip off in history)

Monthly are supposed to be for the upkeep of servers. However, ArenaNet proved to us that perhaps that isn't neccesary. It is highly possible that a lot of MMOs have been ripping people off.

Well GW 2 will be DX10 compatible they have said that for sure and they said it will keep the same cost structure so i think well see something better and it will only be a buy the game and play set up. It will be prettier too

They have stated NO MONTHLY fee adamantly from the beginning of promoting GW2. As for look, the main reason I never got into WoW was its horrid graphics, after playing gw for so long I couldnt bring myself to deal with the SNES quality graphics that WoW sports
